HISTORY OF PANEM Panem is a nation founded after unspecified global catastrophes such as natural disasters and wars/plagues/man-made disasters annihilated much of the population of the world. In the ashes of what had once been North America arouse Panem. The shape of the land was unrecognizable. The rising seas reshaped the shoreline, and small groups of people clung together wherever they found others. So formed the districts. In their center, secure and fortified high in what had once been the Rocky Mountains lay the Capitol. The Capitol rebuilt the country's infrastructure and ruled its inhabitants with an iron fist. Thirteen districts, all charged with providing one essential component for the good of all. One central Capitol, an oppressive and totalitarian regime, whose residents lived in luxury on the toils of those in the districts. Twenty five years ago, the districts, led by District Thirteen rebelled and went to war against the Capitol for their freedom. The revolution was quashed nearly as quickly as it was started, and District Thirteen was wiped off the face of the Earth (or so people think). The remaining Districts, subdued, were forced to live in even greater hardship, living in compounds encircled by electrified fences and under the eye of the Capitol guard every hour of every day. The totalitarian President Snow keeps the Districts on a short leash, anda ll activities of daily life are highly monitored, and participation in government regulated aspects of life is mandatory. People who question or object to this treatment or in any way show resistance have a way of disappearing forever. In the past twenty five years, the twelve remaining Districts have slowly tried to rebuild under the Capitol thumb. With all the fight gone out of them, the residents are forced each year to honor the Capitol and pay the price for their rebellion by sending their own children to fight in the Hunger Games. |
