HISTORY OF THE GAMES

Depending on who you ask the Hunger Games are glory, they are tribute, they are punishment. Designed by President Snow to keep the Districts oppressed, the Hunger Games force the Districts to send two children to fight to the death every year in a televised spectacle that is mandatory viewing for all citizens of Panem.

The Tributes of the games are chosen from a pool of all the children of each district between the ages of 12 and 18. Normally the names are drawn at random in a lottery, the amount of entrants depending on the age of the young person as well as any tesserae they have taken, which is extra food and oil they receive in exchange for an extra entry in the games. However, every twenty five years, the Capitol holds a Quarter Quell, where the rules change. In the Twenty Fifth Hunger Games the Tributes are chosen by the vote of each Districts populace, making the people decide which child shall be sent to likely die.

Each year only one Tribute wins the game. They go on to be Victors and Mentors to future Tributes. They live in relative comfort and luxury in the Victor's Village, with a large stipend and whatever they may want. However they are at the Capitol's mercy, and are often political pawns in President Snow's machinations.
